            About Cervinia

            Why ski here

At the foot of the Matterhorn, Breuil-Cervinia sits in the Aosta Valley. Its ski area ranks among the largest in the Alps and connects with the slopes of Valtournenche and Zermatt in Switzerland. Snowpark Cervinia is also part of the resort.

Breuil-Cervinia’s ski area connects with Valtournenche and the Swiss slopes of Zermatt, where skiing is available all year. Cervino Springtime brings costume skiing into the spring calendar. A resort update described Easter conditions as wintry, with temperatures well below freezing at night.

On a rest day, visitors can spend time in Breuil-Cervinia’s village and visit Capanna Luigi Amedeo di Savoia, a former high-altitude refuge now devoted to the history of mountaineering. The “A Mountain of Work” museum at Plateau Rosà displays photographs and equipment documenting the construction of the Plateau Rosà and Furggen cable cars.

            Highlights

            • Pistes cross the border

Breuil-Cervinia, Valtournenche and Zermatt are linked by pistes and lifts, letting skiers cross between Italy and Switzerland without removing skis.

            • Rail and bus via Châtillon

Châtillon/Saint-Vincent is the closest train station, with bus services to Breuil-Cervinia.

            • Ski from autumn to spring

Lifts in Breuil-Cervinia run daily from October until May, with the high altitude bringing skiing into autumn and spring.

            • Swim after the slopes

Valtournenche's multipurpose sports centre has a swimming pool, weight room and gym.

            • Tour beneath the Matterhorn

Two marked, paved ski-mountaineering itineraries run in the Plan Maison area, with views of the Matterhorn.

            When to visit

            • December - April

Breuil-Cervinia’s lifts run daily from October until May. Its high altitude extends skiing into autumn and spring.

Operating calendars differ across the area. Valtournenche has a shorter season than Breuil-Cervinia, while Chamois and Torgnon have more limited opening periods. At the season’s edges, a trip covering several areas may have fewer open options. Current lift and piste openings are worth checking before plans are fixed.

            Frequently asked questions

Practical answers about ski in Cervinia.

From the high border above Trockener Steg, pistes cross the watershed and descend towards Cervinia or Valtournenche on the sunnier southern side of the Matterhorn. The Italian descents are long and open, but the crossing sits high on exposed glacier terrain, so the route depends on the connecting lifts running.

A traveller needs an international pass that explicitly covers the Italian pistes in Cervinia and Valtournenche. A Swiss-only Zermatt ticket stops at the border ridge, and an Italian-area ticket does not automatically include the Swiss side. Pass products and conditions differ, so the exact coverage needs checking before the ski day.

Wind, cloud or storms can close the high crossing lifts first, leaving the border link unavailable or stopping it early. A traveller should check the full route and lift status on the day, carry a passport or photo ID, and plan the return around the last connecting lifts. Missing them can mean a long road transfer around the valleys.

Rental locations are listed in Cervinia village and at Plan Maison, so collection can happen either near the village or on the mountain. A traveller arranging a lesson should confirm the school’s meeting point, whether equipment needs to be collected beforehand, and any lift access needed to reach the shop. The return location also needs checking before departure day.

A certified protective helmet is mandatory for all alpine skiers in Italy. Snow cover can have irregularities from grooming, daily use or snowfall, and slopes may contain small stones or artificial snow piles. Skiers should adjust speed to visibility, weather, piste conditions and traffic, and stop at the piste edge rather than in narrow passages.
