Hiking in Madeira

See stays

3stays

Madeira’s levadas follow ancient watercourses across the island, often descending gently beneath laurel forest. At Rabaçal, levadas pass through green forest towards waterfall pools. Elsewhere, the central massif rises into craggy, rocky paths around Pico Ruivo. The terrain shifts from level canal-side paths to exposed ridges, with routes that favour steady distance or steep ascents. On the eastern tip, Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço crosses a drier peninsula, with volcanic rock and cliffs above the sea.

        About Madeira

        Why hiking here

Madeira’s levadas follow ancient watercourses across the island, often descending gently beneath laurel forest. At Rabaçal, levadas pass through green forest towards waterfall pools. Elsewhere, the central massif rises into craggy, rocky paths around Pico Ruivo. The terrain shifts from level canal-side paths to exposed ridges, with routes that favour steady distance or steep ascents. On the eastern tip, Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço crosses a drier peninsula, with volcanic rock and cliffs above the sea.

The ridge crossing towards Pico Ruivo starts near Pico do Areeiro, while Rabaçal offers levada paths through forest. Vereda dos Balcões at Ribeiro Frio suits a gentler outing, while the central summits bring exposure and stepped climbs. Conditions need respect: cloud can cover the ridge, levada paths can be slippery in rain, and strong winds are a reason to turn back. Classified routes require advance reservations, and their status can change between open, restricted and closed. Current access needs checking before setting out.

Paúl do Mar village offers a rest afternoon, with a sea wall facing the Atlantic. The village has a couple of bars, with the ocean at its edge. Terraced smallholdings and banana plantations lie above the village.

        Highlights

        • Check Madeira trail status

Visit Madeira lists classified routes as open, restricted or closed, so current status can be checked before setting out.

        • Reserve classified walks

Access to Madeira’s classified walking trails requires advance booking through the SIMplifica portal.

        • Prepare for Madeira weather

Walker guidance warns that January can bring rain and scorching conditions; heavy rain or strong winds call for turning back.

        • Add mountain trail running

Trail running is also offered in Madeira’s mountain areas, alongside its levada and footpath walks.

        • Levadas and rugged summits

Ancient levadas descend gently across the island; craggy summits around Pico Ruivo are networked with rocky footpaths.

        When to visit

        • March - October

Spring is a good time for walking: occasional rain keeps vegetation lively and watercourses in good condition, while longer, brighter days favour time on the trails. Summer brings long, sunny days and pleasant temperatures, with cooler mountain regions and warmer coastal areas. Madeira’s microclimates mean conditions on high ground can differ from those by the sea.

Autumn brings pleasant days, fewer visitors than in summer and a more relaxed pace, quieter time for walks. Winter remains suitable for walks along levadas, though higher elevations can be cooler. Rain, strong winds or fog can lead to temporary trail closures, so walkers should check route status before setting out.

        Frequently asked questions

Practical answers about hiking in Madeira.

Some levadas follow ancient watercourses on a gentle descent. Around Pico Ruivo, rugged summits are crossed by rocky footpaths. Most walks involve some climbing and descending, and steep sections may not suit walkers unused to heights.

Vereda do Burro is described as an easy walk linking Pico do Areeiro with the Funchal Ecological Park Welcome Centre. Vereda da Ilha starts with a short climb towards Madeira’s highest peak via Vereda do Pico Ruivo and is rated moderate. Walkers should match the route to their fitness and experience, not just its stated difficulty.

Access to classified walking trails requires an advance reservation through the SIMplifica portal, including for individual hikers and groups. Each booking selects a trail and entry slot, and slots close when capacity is reached. Check the official trail page for open, restricted or closed status before setting out.

Mountain weather in Madeira can change quickly. Official guidance advises walkers not to continue in heavy rain or strong winds. Carry waterproofs, spare clothing, a map and compass. A torch helps on levada walks that pass through tunnels. Some paths may be overgrown or bordered by bushes and brambles, so walking boots are essential.

On Vereda do Areeiro, the section beyond Pedra Rija Viewpoint towards Pico Ruivo operates in one direction, so it does not return hikers to Pico do Areeiro. Exits from Pico Ruivo use Vereda da Ilha or Vereda do Pico Ruivo, and hikers must plan their own transport back. Check current trail notices before departure.
