            About Fife

            Why hiking here

The Fife coastline shifts from urban shore to golden sands, with forests and rolling countryside inland. The Fife Coastal Path between Buckhaven and Elie starts in an urban, sometimes industrial area before reaching golden sands. The stretch from Cambo Sands to Leuchars takes walkers to geological features including Buddo Rock and the Rock and Spindle.

Across the Heart of Fife, Discovery Trails run through Burntisland, Kirkcaldy and Markinch; collections also cover Levenmouth and Dunfermline. The routes range from easy strolls to longer outings, with interactive maps and audio guides available. Near Markinch, the Braes Loan Trail forms a circular route on the town’s outskirts. At Wemyss, the Wemyss Coastal Trail follows the Fife Coastal Path, with the sea to the right.

Kirkcaldy Galleries and Adam Smith Close sit near the site of Adam Smith’s House. In Dunfermline, Abbot House and Dunfermline Abbey appear among Fife’s named highlights; the Abbey is at the edge of Pittencrieff Park. The Wemyss Caves are a highlight on the Wemyss Coastal Trail.

            Highlights

            • Follow Fife Discovery Trails

Fife Discovery Trails groups walking routes across the area, with interactive maps and audio guides for following trails.

            • Reach the coast by rail

A train link from Edinburgh reaches nearby Leven, and bus services stop at Elie, St Monans, Pittenweem and Anstruther.

            • Expect rocky sections

The Fife Coastal Path ranges from easy footpaths to tricky rocky tracks, and some sections are remote or tidal.

            • Swim at Ruby Bay

At Elie, Ruby Bay offers a swim after walking the Fife Coastal Path.

            • Climb above Fife's farmland

The Lomond Hills rise from surrounding farmland to West and East Lomond, adding elevated hill routes beyond the coast.

            When to visit

            • May - September

The research does not identify a strongest season for hiking in Fife. It describes spring to autumn as giving longer days and milder weather for the Great Glen Way, but does not give the same seasonal guidance for the Fife Coastal Path, which runs from Kincardine to Newburgh.

The research offers no Fife-specific weather or crowd guidance, so conditions are harder to judge in advance. Its references to blossom and birdsong in spring, cold-weather walks in winter and changing woodland colour in autumn describe woodland walks across Scotland, not Fife’s coast. It lists no Fife-specific hiking event or seasonal warning, so it does not establish a best time to walk the route.
